Wisdom teeth are mostly extracted either before or after they come in the oral cavity. They commonly become visible in the oral cavity during the late teens or early 20s. These teeth often get stuck in the jaws (impacted) and do not come out. They need to be removed if they are decayed or cause pain. Sometime wisdom teeth are blocked by other teeth or may not have enough room to erupt in the mouth completely. This can irritate the gum, resulting in pain and swelling. In this case, that wisdom tooth must be removed.
A wisdom tooth removal is called surgical extraction because it involves teeth that are halfway or completely below the gums. Many general dentists will refer this procedure to an oral surgeon. At Advance Urgent Dental Dr. Tariq Ali Khan perform wisdom tooth extractions: Dr. Tariq Ali Khan is a foreign-trained oral surgeon who is licensed as a general dentist in Ontario.
